Our History

March 12th, 1928

1928

Mazapan School is founded by Standard Fruit of Honduras. It opened its doors with Miss Margaret Snowden, a teacher from Louisiana Public School System and thirty-eight students in attendance.

1960

Sister Mary Agnes Perez begins administration of Mazapan School. The school offered instruction from 1st to 9th garde.

March 4th, 1963

1963

Mazapan School adds Spanish to the curriculum in the hands of Mrs. Finda de Valle, who taught 3 times a week.

1966

Achievement and intelligence testing was introduced by Sister Margarita as an effort to measure the program against those in the U.S.

1967

Standard Fruit of Honduras decides to open 10th and 11th grade, officially opening High School studies, under the direction of school principal, Mr. William Fascitelli.

1968

Mazapan School joined the Association of Bilingual Schools of Honduras (ABSH) made up of Escuela Internacional Sampedrana, Academia Americana of San Pedro Sula, The American School of Tela and La Lima, and the American School of Tegucigalpa.

September - December

1972

Mazapan School was accredited at the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) convention in New Orleans.

September - December

1982

Mr. Frederick Thompson, then the school's director, added Computer Science and band to the curriculum.

1985

Under the direction of Dr. Raymond Marshall, Mazapan School was incorporated into the Honduran Ministry of Education.

1991 - 1996

Dr. Thompson’s second term at Mazapan began in the fall of 1991, his focus centered on technology and introduced learning styles and Lions Quest International into the curriculum.

1996

In the fall of 1996, Ms. Helen Austin accepted the position of superintendent of Mazapan School. Under her leadership, the school refocused its efforts on the basics of responsibility, discipline, and values. She also concentrated efforts in the infrastructure of the school.

1998

Hurricane Mitch ravaged through Honduras, our students and staff members helped to rebuild many houses, cleared the downed trees and brush from our campus, went out to rural areas to help translate for medical caravans, and aiding in the distribution of food to the impoverished.

2009

Mazapan began the Preschool program with Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten.

2010

In 2010, Mazapan graduated the first Kindergarten class.

2012

Mazapan decided to open its doors to La Ceiba’s 3-year olds by opening Nursery.

2001

Mrs. Martha Counsil became Superintendent of Mazapan School, her leadership focused on the school’s improvement plan and development of a customized curriculum designed for Mazapan students’ needs and preparedness for higher education both locally and internationally.

2016

Mrs. Courtney Cullum was appointed as the Superintendent after the retirement of Mrs. Counsil. Her leadership consisted of providing more Advanced Placement (AP) courses, continued curriculum and assessment development, and the enhancement of facilities.
